Estimates of a Labour Supply Function Using Alternative Measures of Hours of Work

چکیده
Estimates of a Labour Supply Function Using Alternative Measures of Hours of Work Depending on data source, estimates of hours of work give widely different results both as to level and change. In this paper three alternative measures of hours worked are used to estimate a simple labour supply function to investigate if estimated wage rate and income effects are data dependent as well. The measures used include those from time-use surveys and those from regular surveys. The latter are based on the responses to a question about normal weekly hours of market work. The results suggest that estimates of the wage rate effects become much smaller when measures of normal hours are used compared to data collected for a well-defined time period close to the date of interview, such as time-use data. The income effects appear less sensitive to the choice of data. JEL Classification: J22, C81, C39

The Effect of Elderly Care-giving on Female Labour Supply in Indonesia
In developing countries without universal social safety nets, co-residence between older parents and adult children is a central feature of old-age security arrangements. However, the impact of the health status of elderly on adult care-giving members’ labour supply is less well-known. In this paper we use data from the 2000 Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS 3), to examine the impact of care-...
متن کاملEvaluating the Income Redistribution Effects of Tax Reforms in Discrete Hours Models*
Recent studies have examined tax policy issues using labour supply models characterised by a discretised budget set. Microsimulation modelling using a discrete hours approach is probabilistic. This makes analysis of the distribution of income difficult as even for a small sample with a modest range of labour supply points the range of possible labour supply combinations over the sample is extre...
متن کاملCombating Agricultural Child Labour for National Development: Implications for the Millenium Development Goals in Nigeria
A simmering crisis in the Nigerian agriculture today involves labour and the crisis manifests itself in the degree of labour availability, labour demand and labour productivity. One of the major products of this crisis is the increased participation of children in paid, non-familiar agricultural jobs. Agriculture ranks as one of the three most dangerous work activities, along with mining and co...
متن کاملFree to Choose? Differences in the Hours Determination of Constrained and Unconstrained Workers
In individual surveys, large minorities of individuals typically report that they would like to change their weekly working hours at their current hourly wage. If this evidence reflects genuine constraints on individuals’ choice of hours, the determinants of hours should differ between constrained and unconstrained groups. Controlling for selection by an extension of the Heckman two-step method...
متن کاملFertility and Female Labour Supply
The estimated relationship between the number of children and female labour supply is often negative; however, it is not clear whether this arises because of a causal effect of children on labour supply, or whether it is the result of heterogeneous preferences (women who have a preference for home-based activities have more children and a lower preference for market work). The fact that parents...
